Pop Devotion Series – Defining a Personal Artistic Language

The Pop Devotion series has played a pivotal role in my artistic career. It marked my first consistent step towards defining a personal artistic language. In this body of work, I combined my experience with icons, church artifact restoration, and sacred objects. In addition, I integrated the aesthetics of tattoos, especially those connected with prison culture. These two worlds were not only important to my professional journey but also deeply resonated with my personal passions. Moreover, both are symbolic and sacred while remaining intensely personal to me. As a result, merging these distinct elements into a cohesive whole became a compelling challenge. Consequently, the Pop Devotion series evolved into a bridge between spiritual traditions and modern visual culture.

Inspiration & Conceptual Background

While developing the Pop Devotion series, I reflected on how traditional spirituality can coexist with modern visual culture. This reflection led me to explore deeper meanings hidden within symbols, objects, and artistic rituals. Therefore, the series gradually became a study of transformation — both personal and cultural.

Materials, Mediums & Visual Experimentation

As the Pop Devotion series developed, I began to experiment with different materials. I used fabrics like silk, velvet, and brocade, along with synthetic textiles and gold-finished surfaces. In addition, I incorporated various mediums, including spray paints, resins, and synthetic compounds, combined with traditional oils and acrylics. For example, many pieces juxtapose smooth silk backgrounds with rough, layered textures. This deliberate contrast highlights the interplay between fragility and strength, adding visual depth and tension to the compositions. Furthermore, these experiments allowed me to discover new techniques and develop a richer artistic vocabulary.

Symbols, Identity & Emotional Layers

At the heart of the Pop Devotion series lies an exploration of identity spirituality, and the darker facets of the human experience. Each piece carries a sense of mystery and raw emotion. However, moments of playfulness and irony also emerge throughout the work. Therefore, the Pop Devotion series captures the emotional complexity of modern existence, revealing the tension between sacredness and vulnerability.

A Shift Towards Symbolic Representation

This departure from traditional painting techniques represents a bold shift towards symbolic representation, with drawing serving as the central focus. Through the Pop Devotion series, I sought to balance sacred traditions with contemporary aesthetics — creating a visual dialogue between the past and present.
