The icon series has been pivotal in my artistic career, marking my first serious and consistent step towards defining my own artistic language. In this body of work, I integrated my experiences from working with icons, restoring church artifacts, and engaging with sacred objects, alongside the aesthetics of tattoos, particularly those found within prison culture. Both of these realms were not only significant aspects of my professional journey but also deep and fascinating worlds that resonated with my personal passions. They are both symbolic and sacred, as well as deeply personal to me. It was a compelling challenge to find a way to merge these distinct elements into a cohesive piece.
As I developed the series, I began to experiment with various materials, using them as grounds for my paintings. I explored fabrics such as silk, velvet, and brocade, alongside synthetic materials and textiles with gold effects. Additionally, I incorporated a range of mediums, including spray paints, resins, and synthetic compounds, all combined with traditional oils and acrylics.
At the heart of this series lies an exploration of identity, spirituality, and the darker facets of the human experience. Each piece is imbued with a sense of mystery and raw emotion, while also offering moments of playfulness and irony. This departure from traditional painting techniques signifies a bold shift towards symbolic representation, with drawing serving as the central focus.
