„My passion for art began when I was a child, when I would spend hours drawing and painting (…)”
A Bit About Me
I am Eugen, an artist whose journey with art began in early childhood. From a young age, I was drawn to visual expression, and over the years, I dedicated myself to developing my skills and growing as a professional artist. My passion for art led me to complete a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, a foundation that has allowed me to explore an array of visual mediums. From icon painting with tempera to spray painting and animation, I’ve worked with almost every visual technique, blending traditional and contemporary methods to discover new visual effects and textures. This freedom in my artistic language allows me to fuse and experiment with various techniques—an important part of my creative journey.
One of the turning points in my career was my final year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland. During this time, I transitioned from the rigorous academic style that had been ingrained in me since my art studies in Kyiv, a style typical for students across Eastern Europe. At Wroclaw, I began developing my own visual language, moving beyond conventional frameworks to experiment with different mediums and styles. This shift is evident in my “Icons” series, where I blended elements of street art aesthetics and traditional tattoo imagery, especially criminal tattoos—a visual language I found raw, honest, and deeply authentic. This series marked a breakthrough in my creative journey, an important step in finding my own “artistic voice” and the true beginning of a conscious and personal exploration in art.
For my Master’s diploma project, I created a series of large-scale, expressive, and aggressive paintings that captured my identity as an artist at that stage in my life. Those final student years were some of my most productive, filled with exhibitions, competitions, and various artistic activities. However, the intense pace of intellectual, social, and creative work led to burnout. I took a break from art to recharge, which ultimately brought me to a transformative experience: a trip to Hawaii.
The Hawaiian environment became a profound source of inspiration. Surrounded by an entirely different atmosphere, I returned to one of the most intuitive and tactile mediums—watercolor. This period led to the “Hawaiian” series, where my approach to art softened, becoming more reflective, intuitive, and filled with a sense of sensuality. These works hold a special place in my story, marking a personal and artistic shift that brought new perspectives into my work.
In 2023, I returned to Europe, where I set up my current studio and began working on a new series that blends traditional painting techniques in oil and acrylic. This body of work is an essential blend of my past and present self, merging elements of my early artistic identity with the personal growth I experienced abroad. This recent work is also more contextual and introspective, with reflections on the social and political transformations happening in Eastern Europe. I feel as though I am at the beginning of a new, significant cycle in both my professional life and the broader world, which is going through immense changes. Capturing these shifts and transformations in my art has become essential to me, as I strive to preserve and interpret the nuances of our current reality.
